An accounts clerk with the Federal
Medical Centre, Lokoja, Kogi State, has
been sentenced to three months
imprisonment by a State High court
sitting in Koton-Karfe, for defrauding
the centre of N8.3 million.
Mrs. Modupe Adeyemi, who was
arraigned by the Independent Corrupt
Practices And Other Related Offences
Commission, ICPC, was jailed without an
option of fine.
The ICPC arraigned the accused person
alleged to have between October 2006
and April 2007 defrauded the Centre to
the tune of N8.3 million, being part of
the revenue accruing to the centre, on a
30-count charge of allegedly
misappropriating the sum of N8.3million
belonging to the medical centre while
serving as accounts clerk with the
hospital.
Mrs Adeyemi was arraigned on November
29, 2009, before the State High court for
the offences of using her office to
confer corrupt advantage upon herself,
altering duplicate copies of various bank
tellers with the intent to defraud and
making false statements or returns,
contrary to sections 19, section 15 sub-
sections (a) & (c) and section 16 of the
Corrupt practices and Other Related
Offences Act, 2000 respectively.
ICPC prosecutor, Henry Emore, informed
the trial judge that each time the
accused person was sent to deposit some
money in various banks belonging to the
centre, she deposited only a part of the
money and pocketed part of it.
According to the prosecutor, she did this
successfully by altering duplicate copies
of the bank tellers which she returned to
the centre.
